Environmentally Friendly Roofing Options – Easy on the mind, even easier on the hip pocket

We all know it’s important to keep mindful of the impact we’re making on the environment, and here at Westwood Roofing it’s no different. For those of us within the construction industry, it’s important to remain mindful of the impact we’re making on the environment. Our philosophy is that we like to let the environmental sustainability of our finished slate tiling projects speak for themselves. Recently however, we’ve completed a project that we are particularly proud of, one that we cannot wait to share with you.

Mosman is where this particular slate tiling story takes place. Initially we had been contacted by the owners to complete a relatively straight forward slate tile refurbishment and installation on this sprawling heritage listed house on Sydney’s lower North Shore. Upon our arrival at the site however, it became quickly apparent that this particular slate tiling installation was going to be anything but straight forward.

The team at Westwood Roofing worked in close consultation with the solar panel installation company to produce a result which would wholeheartedly exceed the owners expectations.

We suggested to the owners that our extensive experience and expertise in this exact area may be exactly what was needed to get this project to the finish line. We were surprised at the number of solar panel installation companies unwilling to commit to successfully waterproof the solar panel fixing systems. Our team worked tirelessly to come up with a solution that would not just work, but exceed every expectation the owners had initially held.

In order to be able to do this, we suggested to sark and batten the area and re-nail the roof with slate we had kept surplus from other previous projects. We also installed new box gutters and hand-made terracotta ridges and finials. Our bracket expert hand-made 16 custom bracket fixings to hold the solar panels in place.

We were able to fit the fixings without complications and our close work with the solar panel installation company resulted in a great-looking and high quality solar panel installation. This was the first time any of us here at Westwood Roofing had attempted an install of this type and truth be told, this has got us thinking.

If there are countless solar panel installation companies refusing to work on roofs with slate tiling due to inexperience with slate, perhaps our particular extensive experience could be exactly what is needed. We enjoyed working on this project so much that we are now hoping to offer slate tiling refurbishments to owners looking to install solar panels on their existing roofs.

One of the things that we’ve learnt after this particular project is that in an increasingly green-conscious city, solar panels are an important addition for every home. If you have any concern about the impact you’re making on the environment, then considering having solar panels installed on your roof is an excellent way in which to reduce your carbon footprint. Using recycled roofing materials is another great way to reduce your environmental impact, while also keeping your budget under control.
